We are continuing through Physicians Week, an honorary time where we recognize and celebrate the dedication of the physicians that spend so much time and energy providing high-quality patient care. Dr. Scott Heyl is a one of four physicians at Heyl Family Practice. Even though he is extremely personable and with everyone he meets in the office, we wanted to take the opportunity to share a little bit more about the loveable and dependable, Dr. Scott Heyl.
Get to Know Dr. Scott Heyl - Family Medicine Doctor in Pittsburgh
Dr. Scott Heyl is the third generation of this longstanding family practice that's supported the community over 75 years. With his grandfather, Frank Heyl, being the first generation of family medicine in West View, his legacy has lived on through his son, Dr. Lou Heyl, and now his grandson, Dr. Scott. After completing medical school at the American University of the Caribbean and working through residency at UPMC St. Mary, this board-certified Family Medicine doctor has proven himself to be a vital part of this team.
Over the years, he has earned various well-deserved accolades including the title of Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2021, Best of the Best Family Physician in 2020, Top Physicians Under 40 in 2019. He also continues to learn each day by reading articles about the medical field and conditions he treats. For example, Dr. Scott Heyl has learned a lot about gout over the years and wanted to share his suggestions on how to manage gout attacks in an article written this year.
Dr. Heyl sees patients at both the West View and McCandless offices, but spends the majority of his time at the McCandless Office. Dr. Heyl thoroughly enjoys helping patients, especially those who are struggling with their mental health. He takes pride in talking with patients and devising a plan that will put them at ease. He is known for being a great listener and having fantastic bedside manner.
Dr. Heyl holds a few different roles alongside his primary responsibility as a doctor at the practice. He is the E-Record Medical Director at UPMC Passavant, Board of Bridges Accountable Care Organization (ACO) member, and the Secretary of the Genesis Medical Associates Board of Directors. When he is not in the clinic seeing patients, he also oversees patients and supports Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) at North Hills Health and Rehab and Wexford Health Center.
His favorite thing about family medicine is the ability to establish close relationships with his patients and their families. He states, “I like to help them through difficult times.” Dr. Scott Heyl believes you should be empathetic and treat your patients like they truly are your family. His patients can surely agree with that. His patience and his genuine nature are two things patients comment on consistently.
When he is not in the clinic, Dr. Heyl enjoys spending time with his family and being on the golf course. Did you know he's traveled to golf courses all over the country?
If you ask him why Heyl Family Practice is different than other primary care providers, he will tell you, “We’re unique because we’ve been around a long time... over 75 years. We still see patients that started with us in their youth even though they’ve moved to hospital or personal care. We truly care for patients at every level of their health... young and old.”
Hear What Patients Have to Say About Dr. Scott Heyl
Without a doubt, patients love Dr. Heyl because of his ability to listen and make you feel heard. He doesn't necessarily watch the clock when he's with you because the important thing is answering your questions - even if it takes things over a few minutes. He has recieved many five star reviews over the years, so we figured we would highlight a few reviews that stood out and really captured Dr. Scott's greatest qualities as a primary care provider:
'So far, my experience has been perfect! Dr. Scott listens to you and does not rush. He treats you with respect and empathy. He actually wants to know what's on your mind beyond what the chart says. I want my doctor to know me as a person and not just a patient. It's important to me. Dr Scott Heyl is my doctor.' - Bruce B., 2022
'Dr Scott has got to be by far the most caring and patient doctor that has ever taken their boards.
They teach doctors a lot of things in medical school, although they certainly do not teach bedside manner. Dr. Scott has taken extra courses in this on his own. I never feel rushed and he actually does care about what is going on. He takes time to listen and to explain. The day Dr. Scott signed 'MD' behind his name, this world became such a brighter place.' - Susan B., 2022
In addition to written reviews and testimonials, we had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff Dumm, one of Dr. Scott's patients, to discuss his experience not only with Dr. Heyl, but with our practice. Jeff originally saw Dr. Heyl and sees Matt Bocian now, but he credits Dr. Heyl with opening his eyes to something early on that he was avoiding - his diabetes management.
