Physician's Week is an honorary time where we recognize and celebrate the dedication of the physicians that spend so much time and energy providing high-quality patient care. This year, Physicians Week is recognized March 25-31, 2022. At Heyl Family Practice, Dr. Louis Heyl is one of four physicians that go above and beyond the call of duty with their patients. We are excited to showcase each of our physicians and the impact they've made on their patient community.

Get to Know Dr. Louis Heyl - Family Medicine Doctor in Pittsburgh

Dr. Louis Heyl, MD is a founding member of Genesis Medical Associates and second generation physician at Heyl Family Practice. He started his career in medicine alongside his father, Frank Heyl, creating a legacy of high-quality patient care. With over 40 years of experience in family medicine, Dr. Heyl has earned the trust of many families in the West View and now McCandless area. 

As a primary care provider working with adults to manage their acute and long-term needs, Dr. Heyl has gained experience in a wide-variety of treatment options and conditions. He has seen a lot of success in guiding patients on the health benefits of plant based nutrition with things like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Dr. Heyl put in additional coursework through Cornell University to earn a certification in plant-based nutrition in 2011.

Through that coursework and his own lifestyle of plant-based and whole food eating, Dr. Heyl is truly an example of someone that puts his advice into action. He is passionate about it because he knows the benefits are visible and impactful. As stated by Dr. Heyl, 'the research behind plant-based nutrition and it's ability to reverse the effects of heart disease is astounding.' Helping patients that are looking to implement a lifestyle change like this is one of his favorite things.

Did you know that Dr. Heyl likes to fly fish? He has traveled to many different places outside of Pennsylvania to fish including Montana, Florida, Yellowstone and Big Horn River, Wyoming and Utah! When he's not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and his four grandchildren.

He also help various leadership positions over the course of his career including the past Chairman of Family Medicine at UPMC Passavant and past President of Genesis Medical Associates. Taking it a step further, Dr. Heyl was a founding member of Genesis Medical Associates, brainstorming the idea at his kitchen table nearly 30 years ago.

Dr. Heyl practices at both of our offices (West View and McCandless), providing his patients options to see him where it's most convenient for them. Even with a doctor as successful and well-loved as Dr. Heyl, he has availability for new patients and current patients. We offer same day appointments and a wide range of hours Monday-Friday to meet patient needs at both offices with Dr. Heyl and the other providers on staff.
